PART 23: IT’S TIME TO MARRY!

<< Previous So, it’s time to get married! No. I am not talking about my plan | desire to get married, again! It is about getting married to a method of Fish-Keeping. Well, it is like a marriage. It is a crucial decision and a long-term association with a method. The impact of the decision and association is not usually small and short-term. So, I just wondered, what would be the best method to go ahead with! In the context of Freshwater Aquariums, there are a number of popular methods that have evolved over the last hundred years or so. I did some reading and eventually wanted to concentrate on a few of those methods.

I am a Lean Living Practitioner and Sustainability is my primary theme. I would love a method that makes the whole affair as natural (close to nature) as possible. It is not about the looks of my aquarium | Fishbowl. It is, rather, about whether my Fishbowl really feels natural to its inhabitants. I took a close look at Diana Walstad’s El Natural Method | Walstad Method | NPT (Natural Planted Tank) Method and Tom Barr's Low Tech Method. I really liked Diana Walstad’s El Natural Method. It looked very natural. I liked Tom Barr's Low Tech Method, as well. However, there were a couple of thoughts that flashed in my mind.

1. I did not really want care for plants. I am the Fish guy! I am not really a Plant guy! Fishes were all that I wanted to care for ever, in my Fishbowl. I thought, plants in my Fishbowl would mean more work on my part. And, I did not really want to spend time on caring for the plants!

2. I really did not want to deal with soil in my Fishbowl. Soil, I thought, was a good substrate. But, there was good possibility of accidentally messing it up during cleaning and water changes. So, I just wanted to keep soil out of my Fishbowl. And, if I did not go for plants, why would I need soil at all, was the question in my mind.

I continued with my reading, analysis and brainstorming! Thoughts and ideas started to solidify in my mind. I thought about the tiny waterholes I had come across at the Anjuna Beach during my vacation in Goa. I continued thinking. There was no one to feed the fishes in those tiny rocky waterholes. Still, there were so many fishes in those waterholes and those fishes looked absolutely healthy and happy. What did they eat? To survive and stay healthy fishes need a constant source of food supply. What was that food-source at Anjuna? Whatever it was, I was not sure, but thought, it included Green Algae, for sure! I had noticed a good growth of Green Algae in those waterholes. Those waterholes received direct sunlight and indirect sunlight. And, that had helped the algae-growth. And, the fishes, in those waterholes, probably had adapted themselves to stay healthy on Green Algae. Green Algae are an excellent natural live food for fishes. This whole bunch of information took the form an idea in my mind.

Usually, aquarists try their best to keep their aquariums away from sunlight and free from algae. And, I wanted to build a Fishbowl using those two elements that most of us would like to avoid. Sunlight and Algae were those two elements. To give that idea a form, I wanted to document it in form of a method. And, I did so. After I was done with documenting the method, I was really impressed with the massive set of advantages it had the potential to offer. I gave the method a name. That was, DPM Natural Method. And, I made up my mind to create the very first DPM Type Natural Fishbowl. The DPM Natural Method and the procedure involved in creating a DPM Type Natural Fishbowl | Aquarium is described next. NEXT >>  << Previous
